About Badakhshan Travel

Central Asia's most remote corners, expertly guided.

Badakhshan Travel has been running expeditions through the Pamir Highway, Wakhan Valley, Fann Mountains, and the Silk Road cities of Central Asia since 2012. We are a locally-based team — our headquarters are in Dushanbe, our guides live in the Pamirs. We know every mountain pass, every border crossing, every family willing to host you for the night.

Our expeditions run across four countries: Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. From technical mountaineering on Peak Somoni at 7,495m to leisurely Silk Road city tours, photography expeditions, and nomadic yurt stays — we design every itinerary around the landscape and the people who live in it.

Why Us

Guided by people who live here.

We're not a Western tour operator with a Tajikistan brochure. We're a team based in Dushanbe, with offices in Khorog in the heart of the Pamirs. Our lead guides have spent their entire lives in these mountains.

Born in the Pamirs

Our guides grew up in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. We know these mountains the way most people know their own city — every pass, every village, every shortcut.

02

Small groups. Real experience.

Maximum 12 people per departure. No tour buses, no crowds. Just you, the landscape, and people who know it deeply.

03

Full logistics included

GBAO permits, visas, 4WD transport, accommodation, meals — we handle every detail so you can focus entirely on the journey.

“I grew up in Khorog. The Pamir was my backyard — not a destination, just home.

My grandfather crossed the Wakhan on horseback. My father drove the M41 before it had a name. When the first foreigners started arriving — curious, wide-eyed, completely unprepared — I started showing them around. First as a teenager guiding hikers near our village. Then professionally, after years learning every pass, every guesthouse owner, every safe route off the map.

My brother Shakar has been beside me from the beginning. While I learned the passes, he learned the people — the families at altitude who would feed you without asking why you were there, the drivers who knew which river crossings flood in June, the border guards who respected a quiet word. Together we understood that the best expedition is never the one printed in the itinerary. It is the one that unfolds when you know how to listen.

What started in Badakhshan has grown into something we could not have planned. We have built a network of specialists across every country of Central Asia — mountain guides from the Kyrgyz highlands, historians who walk the streets of Samarkand as though they built them, Kazakhstani trackers who read the steppe like a manuscript only they can open. Not a roster of contractors. People we have eaten with, camped beside, and trust completely.

Badakhshan Travel is not a company we built to sell holidays. It is a way of sharing places we love, with people who are ready to be changed by them. When you travel with us, you are not a tourist. You are a guest — in our mountains, in our villages, at our tables. We take that seriously.”

What they say

2024
"I've travelled to over 40 countries and the Pamir Highway is unlike anything else. Our guide Rustam knew every family along the road. We slept in yurts, ate with locals, and saw landscapes that don't exist anywhere else on Earth. Badakhshan Travel made it effortless."

Germany · Pamir Highway Classic

2024
"Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva — I had seen the photos, but nothing prepares you for the real thing. The itinerary was perfectly balanced between the major sites and hidden neighbourhoods. Worth every euro."

"Провели две недели в Кыргызстане — юрты, Song-Kul, орлиная охота. Организация на высшем уровне, гид Азамат говорит по-русски и знает каждую тропу. Однозначно вернёмся."

"As a serious trekker I was skeptical about using a local agency. Completely wrong. The logistics in this region are genuinely difficult and the team handled everything. The alpine lakes at 3,400m are worth the climb."

"Summit attempt on Peak Lenin — 7,134m. The acclimatisation schedule was well-planned, base camp was surprisingly comfortable, and the guides genuinely care about your safety over the summit. Did not summit (weather), but already booked again for next July."

Today

Hi! Is the Pamir Highway accessible in early June?

10:24

Hi! Yes, the M41 is fully open by late May — usually clear from June 1. We run our first departures that week. Which dates are you thinking?

10:26

We're a group of 3, looking at June 7–21. Mix of driving and trekking.

13:44

Perfect timing — that's our favourite window. The wildflowers are out in the Wakhan, the road is clear, and the light for photography is extraordinary. We have a departure on June 7 that fits you exactly. Want me to send the full itinerary? 🏔
